# Glossary Definitions for the library, score, version, Follow, calibration, annotation, and practice terms used throughout this guide. > Type: Reference · Status: Stable · Platforms: iPadOS 17+, iPadOS 17+ · Last reviewed: 2026-07-18 ## How to read this glossary Words in inline code are the exact labels used in the app. Controls named in plain text have no visible label on screen. ## Library and organization **Library**
The pieces you have imported or added. The library view can switch between your own library and the `Catalog`. **Catalog**
The online score collection browsed from the `Catalog` view of the library. Catalog scores are served live, so browsing them requires a network connection. **Piece**
A musical work in the library. A piece can contain several score versions and takes. **Collection**
A user-defined group of pieces, created with `New collection…`. A collection groups pieces for browsing; it does not merge their files. **Take**
An audio recording associated with a piece. New takes are named `Take` followed by the recording date and time. A take can be replayed and, when prepared, used as a calibration reference. ## Scores, formats, and versions **Score version**
One stored representation of a piece, such as an imported PDF, MusicXML, MEI, or MIDI file, or a converted Smart Score. Activating a version determines which score the reader and compatible tools use. **Open as**
The switcher that changes which score version an open tab displays. It is reached from the tab's format badge (`PDF`, `XML`, and so on). **PDF**
A fixed-page score. It preserves the source page layout and supports direct page reading and annotation. In `Toolbox`, `Rearrange pages`, `Crop`, and `Dewarp & Clean` need an editable PDF; `Share` and `Print` need a PDF or MusicXML version. **Smart Score**
Structured notation used by notation-aware tools such as `Transpose`. A Smart Score can be imported as MusicXML or MEI, or produced from a PDF with `Convert to Smart Score`. **Conversion**
The network workflow started by `Convert to Smart Score` in `Toolbox`. It reads a PDF and creates structured notation; importing a PDF is not conversion. If the result contains recognition errors, use `Fix a Wrong Conversion` in `Toolbox`. **MIDI**
A `.mid` or `.midi` file. On import it is converted to structured notation, and the original MIDI file is kept with the piece. For per-format import roles and limits, see [File formats](/docs/reference/formats). ## Reader **Tab**
One open score in the reader. The `Open tab limit` stepper in `Settings` caps how many tabs stay open at once. **Toolbox**
The reader's tool panel. It holds score actions (`Table of Contents`, `Follow preset`, `Convert to Smart Score`, `Fix a Wrong Conversion`, and the page-editing rows), practice tools (`Metronome`, `Tuner`, `Transpose`), accessibility input (`Bluetooth page pedal`, `Face gesture page turning`), app and paper themes, and the `Assistant`, `Sync now`, `Report a problem`, `Support`, and `Settings` rows. **Assistant**
The `Assistant` row in `Toolbox` opens `Ask the Score`, a chat about the open piece. Its preferences in `Settings` include an on-device Apple Intelligence option; on supported devices it runs on the device itself at no added cost. **Lab**
The live analysis surface with real-time audio processing and graphics — the heaviest optional feature. `Disable the Lab` in the Performance section of `Settings` turns it off without affecting the reader or the tracker. ## Follow and calibration **Follow**
The live workflow that aligns microphone input with the prepared score and can move the tracker or turn pages. **Follow preset**
The Follow settings for the open score. Open them from the `Follow preset` row in `Toolbox` or the `Follow` tab of the reader side panel — both show the same surface. **Tracker**
The visible position indicator used during Follow or score-linked playback. It can be hidden, shown as a band, or combined with note dots where supported. **Anchor**
A confirmed connection between a performance position and a score position. During Follow, the anchor button in the reader corrects the tracked position after a drift: tap the anchor, then tap the note you are on. **System**
One horizontal row of staves on a score page. **System band**
A calibrated rectangle identifying the visible bounds of one system on a PDF page. **Calibration**
Saved mapping between a score layout, its systems, timing, and a take or Follow reference. A new edition or page layout can require another calibration. **Reference pitch**
The A frequency used by the `Tuner`, set with `Reference pitch` in `Settings`. ## Annotation **Annotation**
User-created ink, text, fingering, mark, or other object placed on a score. With `Draw with Apple Pencil anytime` enabled in `Settings`, touching the score with the Pencil draws without entering an annotation mode first. **Layer**
A separately visible group of annotations or generated notation, such as personal ink, fingering, or analysis. **Fingering**
A finger-number mark (1–5) on a note. Fingerings can be generated as recommendations or written by hand; with `Recognize handwritten fingerings` enabled in `Settings`, a handwritten digit 1–5 becomes a fingering mark and a scribble over a mark erases it. `Revise` re-opens passage selection to request a new recommendation for a passage. ## Storage **Files provider**
A storage location exposed through the iOS or iPadOS Files picker, including iCloud Drive and enabled third-party providers. **iCloud backup**
The copy of your library managed by `iCloud Backup & Sync` in the `Sync` tab of `Settings`. It is not a browsable folder in iCloud Drive; restore it with `Import from iCloud`. For control locations, see the [Settings reference](/docs/reference/settings).
