# Navigate the reader Turn pages, scrub to any page, jump by movement, and switch between open scores without losing your place. > Type: How-to · Status: Stable · Platforms: iPadOS 17+, iPadOS 17+ · Last reviewed: 2026-07-18 Open a score from the library, then move through it three ways: page-edge taps and swipes for the next turn, the bottom scrubber for a long jump, and `Movements` for a jump to a named section. ## Turn pages - Tap the outer quarter of the score — right side for the next page, left side for the previous page. Taps in the middle half of the page never turn it; that area is reserved for selection and notation tools. - Swipe left for the next page, or right for the previous page. - Double-tap the centre of the score to enter or leave full screen. In full screen the score fills the display and the tab strip and scrubber hide; on iPad, and on iPhone in portrait, double-tap again brings them back. Double-tapping there does not leave full screen — it only re-shows the `Landscape uses full screen — rotate upright for navigation` hint. Rotate the phone upright to get the tab strip and scrubber back; the reader then returns to whichever full-screen state you were in before rotating. > **Limit** Page gestures pause while the score is being used as a placement surface: during Follow calibration, while a Focus Mode passage is locked, and while an annotation placement tool is active. Finish or close the active tool and the same gestures turn pages again. ## Scrub to a distant page A thin scrubber track runs along the bottom edge of the score. It fades out a few seconds after your last interaction and reappears whenever the page changes. 1. Touch the round thumb on the track and drag it. 2. A preview card floats above your finger showing the page under the thumb, with a `p. N / total` caption. PDF scores show a real page thumbnail; engraved (MusicXML/MEI) scores show a numbered card. 3. Release to land on the previewed page. ## Two pages in landscape On iPad in landscape, the reader shows two pages side by side, like an open book, whenever the score has a facing page to show. One turn advances a whole spread — two pages — so the visible pair stays a coherent opening; the scrubber caption reads `p. X–Y / total` accordingly. Rotate back to portrait for single pages and single-page turns. > **Beta** The two-page spread is still being rolled out, and how it is switched on may change. If a landscape score stays on a single page, keep working in portrait and turn one page at a time. ## Jump by movement 1. In the reader's top bar, select `Table of Contents`. On iPhone the same entry is inside the `Toolbox`. 2. In the `Movements` sheet, each row is one movement or section with its page range. Select `Open & jump` on a row: the sheet closes and the reader lands on the movement's first page. Two more controls sit on each row: - `Preview` shows the movement's first page in a small popover, so you can confirm the target before jumping. - `Edit movement` re-opens the page picker to change the movement's start, end, and label. The picker accepts a typed page number and shows a tappable thumbnail strip of every page. If the sheet is empty, the score has no movement list yet. Defining and auto-detecting movements is covered in [Score metadata](/docs/library/metadata). ## Save a movement as its own piece In the `Movements` sheet, `Save as a piece` creates a new library entry under the parent score, scoped to that movement. The sub-piece gets its own Properties, annotations, and Follow calibration, while the original score file is shared — no duplicate storage. Select `Save as a piece` again on the same row to remove the sub-piece. > **Note** Follow calibrates a short sub-piece faster and tracks it more tightly than a long parent score. If you rehearse one movement, save it as a piece and calibrate that. ## Switch between open scores Opening another score adds it to the reader's tab strip; select a tab to switch pieces. Open `Tabs and groups` to select several tabs at once, create a named group from the selection, or close the selected tabs. Closing a tab only removes it from the reader — the piece stays in your library. Use `Open library` to return to the library without closing anything. On iPad, two edge shortcuts do the same jobs while a score is open: - Swipe inward from the left edge to open the library. This shortcut is unavailable while a Focus Mode passage is locked. - Swipe inward from the right edge to open the `Toolbox`, unless the reader is in full screen. The visible controls remain the reliable path; the edge swipes are shortcuts. > **Note** On iPhone, reader actions are condensed into the top bar, menus, and sheets, and the `Toolbox` carries controls that the wider iPad layout shows directly. Edge taps, swipes, and the scrubber work the same on both. Double-tap full screen differs: on iPhone in landscape it cannot leave full screen, and rotating upright is the way out.
